Napoleonic project is back

Back on my Napoleonic project. As I already indicated in a previous post, my goal is to achieve two armies (French and Austrian) based on troops compositions and uniforms in use during the Austrian campaign of 1809.

The main idea is to replay all great events of the campaign which began in April 1809 when the Fourth Army Corps of Archiduc Charles crossed the Inn river at Shärding and ended with the French victory at the battle of Wagram. Obviously I will describe more accurately the organization of this campaign, battles we will play, rules we will use, etc. But for now, here are the figures!

According to the Imperial decree of 18 February 1808, the battalion is made up of 4 companies of fusiliers, 1 of grenadiers and 1 of voltigeurs. A company of infantry possessed as many as 140 men on paper but rarely over 120 in practice. I therefore considered 1 figure for 60 men which gives 12 figures for a battalion. The regiment is theoretically made up of 4 fighting battalions. In actual fact, there were rarely more than 3 fighting battalions before 1812. For greater convenience and greater gameplay, my regiment will consist of 2 battalions that gives 24 figures...

According to the article 17 of the same decree, each regiment has an eagle carried by an eagle-bearer with the rank of Lieutenant. Two braves have the title of 2nd and 3rd eagle-bearer, carry halberds with triangular fanions attached and are placed next to the eagle. The eagle is only carried by the first fighting battalion while others have a sign. Finally, 4 sapeurs per battalion are chosen from the company of grenadiers. With the number of figures per battalion I want to use, I cannot strictly follow the decree. Moereover, regulations were not always enforced in practice. So when trying to keep a historical consistency without degrading the gameplay, I have taken some shortcuts...

The first battalion of each regiment could therefore include a 2nd eagle-bearer and 1 sapeur (optionnal in the rules we will play with). On the other hand, each battalion will have an eagle. I think it is much more eye-candy on a gaming table.
So here is the first battalion of the 46th regiment of line infantry in campaign dress. The uniform of the drummer is based on the one from the 63th regiment of line infantry (not been able to find out the one from the 46th) and flag is just a print from the site Napflag. Front Rank figures are still very enjoyable to paint even though I am not completely satisfied with the outcome of my painting. Shades of white where an intermediate color is missing, some edges of collars and lapels where I clearly had a crisis of shaking hands, eyes of some faces that come straight from a horror movie, fanion of the 2nd eagle-bearer that seems to be made by my 5 year old son, etc. But given the magnitude of the project, I think I will have some figures to train and to improve myself!

  1. If you have to improve, I'm waiting to see how good your next units will be. I think your painting is brilliant! C'est magnifique!

  2. Thanks Rosbif for your comment.
In fact, I do not know if it's the same for you but when I realize a figure and I miss somethning,I usually see fairly quickly the defect but it's often too late. Afterwards, whenever I look at the figure, I cannot see something else than the defect. It might be a reason why I prefer to look at my figure from a respectable distance.
The other point is that you can see so many great painted figures on the Net, I cannot help making the comparison.
