Reading time

Here is a new selection of books I read during the winter even if not finished yet (the winter, not the books...). All books are based on the Napoleonic period and more or less connected with my 1809 project.

First selection : THE RETREAT, Patrick Rambaud.
This is the second part of P. Rambaud's Napoleonic trilogy that begins with "The Battle" (see my previous post). This time, the author takes us during the winter 1812, in the midst of these men and women who will drag through the mud, cold and snow of the Russian territory with one thing in mind : to survive! Again, the book is excellent and you really feel completely immersed into the story. Since the euphoric early days in Moscow until the ruthless Berezina, it is a succession of scenes each more terrible than the other leaving no breathing space to readers. A must have!

On the other hand, I am more reserved regarding the last title of the trilogy: THE EXILE. The pace is much less sustained, intrigues of aristocrats are somehow hollow from my point of view and it seems the Emperor gets bored before the end of the book so is the reader. I struggled to finish the book.

Un must have!

Second selection : WAGRAM, F-G Hourtouille.
The only interest of this book is to have beautiful drawings from André Jouineau with uniformes of both sides. For the rest (battle description, order of battle,...), it is better to look at somewhere else.

And this is where the serie of GLOIRE ET EMPIRE magazines occurs. Superb color maps, texts written by specialists from different countries, unbiased analysis, detailed description of battles or campaigns are clearly the main advantages of these magazines compared with some other books. A bit expensive though...

Third selection : SHARPE'S EAGLE, Bernard Cornwell.
A blockbuster novel but I was disappointed. Sharpe is really strong, very strong, even so strong that it becomes totally unrealistic. The man is perfect and I was not able to find a defect whatsoever. But it may be the first novel that wants such a perfection. I will therefore try another one (I have bought "Sharpe's sword"). My mistake has been to read this book just after Rambaud's...

----o----

That's it for today. A few other selection of books in two or three months. I may be changing period and style for a while. To follow in a future post.
