Holidays reading

To me, the holidays are often synonymous with reading. No painting, no TV, no work and long hours available to delve into the books ... So here is a small selection of my recent readings mainly devoted to the Austrian campaign of 1809 of course. I'm sure you understand why (if not here is a link for you to remember).

---ooOoo---

First selectionTHE 1809 CAMPAIGN by Michel Molières
This is the first part of the 1809 campaign which describes the operations from April 20 to 23 and more specifically the operation of Landshut and the battle of Eckmühl. The author describes in great detail the concepts and strategic moves of the French and Austrian by exposing the various alternatives of the two protagonists and the reasons for the choices made. This approach gives an overview of the conflict and allows us to understand exactly how the operations occured. The author does not hesitate to dive in the heart of smaller tactical fights, making this book an excellent choice.

Second selection : NAPOLEON IN AUSTRIA by Michel Molières
This is the second part of the Austrian campaign by Michel Molières which is at the same level than the first volume, meaning excellent. Maps describe both small clashes and large maneuvers, exhaustive orders of battle, new illustrations and a way of writing that leads the reader from the hard work of the infantryman to the highest levels of power. The strategic aspect is still very well detailed here although much of the book is devoted to the battles of Essling and Wagram.

In short, two excellent books that seem, unfortunately available only in French. The price of each book is expensive but it can be reduced by 50% by contracting a subscription "Excellium" from the library "Le livre chez vous".

Third selection : WAGRAM by Frédéric Naulet
After a brief review of political and military situation in Europe, the author describes the Battle of Wagram with particular emphasis on the role of artillery in the two armies. Unfortunately, the description of events and operations remain very academic and sometimes boring. Little or no citations or memories of soldiers that often bring history to life and are involved in giving that little extra to the purely academic description of a military operation.

I did not find an English version of this book. And that's it for today. Another selection of books in 3 or 4 months.
