Lord of the Rings Campaign

First of all, a Happy New Year to all, full of figurines, games, painting, modeling, ... In short, everything that makes a figure collector/player/painter happy!

After a long time of doing nothing on my figurines and thus not really moving on, a new motivation came up in the form of a campaign in the Lord of the Rings GW game. By browsing on Internet, I found this blog very well done that traces all the moments of a campaign opposing the Rohan and Isengard. The rules, map, markers were available for download so we just had to go...

I and a friend of mine decided to start playing this great campaign to start this new year within the right starting blocks. So my pal will play Theoden's Rohirrim (the weak people!) against White Hand troops of Saruman (the strong ones!) played by me. Some modifications and additions on the markers, 2 or 3 additions on the optional rules chapter to incorporate two other armies; the Elve Kingdoms and Mordor, and we were ready!

The idea in this blog is first to present the context, the rules, the armies that will compete and then to detail each step of the campaign and of course each battle. Additional troops for each army, new rules, elements of decor will certainly be intercalated in the coming weeks for the purposes of the campaign and scenarios.

So stay tuned. Soon the context of the campaign, the rules and both armies.

A medieval house

There was a while that this house from Steel Models acquired almost a year ago from Warlords Games sat on my shelf waiting for to be painted. In fact, I was a little disappointed by its size (3 or 4 figures max inside) even if the sculpture is globally well done.
I just could not get myself to start it. Finally I told myself that I could paint it as a tutorial on the blog. Another way to be motivated. I wanted it to be simple with a good final result once on a table game. The idea finally came up to give this post: Painting of a medieval house in 5 steps.

 ---ooOoo---

Step One: The under layer of Black Chaos.

Step Two: Stones with Codex Grey and a few stones in Graveyard Earth, the wood in Sorched Brown, the roof in Bestial Brown followed by Bubonic Brown, the cob in Bestial Brown followed by a brush of Bleached Bone and finally the soil in Goblin Green.

Step Three: A good wash of Devlan Mud.

Troisième étape: Un bon lavis de Devlan Mud.

Step Four: A highlight using the same colors as before. The wood has yet received a first brush with Bestial Brown, followed by another brushing of a mix of Bestial Brown and Snakebite Leather.

Fifth and final stage: Flock of static grass and a little dry grass.

And this is the final result. The rendering is not too bad even if next to a Front Rank figure, it is more like a broom closet than a medieval house...

---ooOoo---

In the series of "Terrain", I'm preparing another tutorial (or step-by-step or WIP whatever it is called) on forests from Architects of War that I find beautiful although the size of trees seems to be reserved for those who play dwarfs... I'll just avoid that they'll stay again one year on my shelf gathering dust ...

The point!

One point! A very small point! That's what separates us from the Holy Grail ... Nothing to do with the figures but the final of the Rugby World Cup 2011 has seen today two great teams clashed against each other at the Eden Park in New Zealand. The game rattled both nations for 80 minutes. The French are disappointed but proud. Although the start of the competition was laborious for the French team, they fought like demons against the best team in the world who played on his field, his country and was supported by an entire people. Well done the Blues (played white today) and see you in 2015!

Well done also to the All Blacks who have offered a superb competition and deserve more than all the other teams to be crowned world champion.

Guelfim, wooden mercenary Elf

Remember Gunther, Captain of the Reikland? Well, here is another miniature incarnation of a character played by one of my buddies in the role playing game of Warhammer. His name is Guelfim. He is a mercenary wooden Elve who does not hesitate to be the first in front when fighting. He practices the art of sword with rarely equaled fighting skills. His power has increased since he has discovered the Elementary sword of the Ancients allowing him to trigger real avalanche of blows on his opponents. In short, you'll understand that he is not in the lace. He has little interest in politics or diplomacy, and the seduction is not his favorite pastime (especially since he had troubles with human women...). You must admit that it is not so common for an Elf. For him, life quickly becomes monotonous if he is not faced to a danger of any kind. Recently, his travels led him to fight a Lich Lord in the border lands along the Old World.

This GW figure is remarkable in many ways. First, there are reliefs and the dynamic of the cape which is a big part of the figure. I painted it so that it does not mitigate the armor. Then there is this great sword. The famous sword of the Ancients had to receive special attention. I wanted to create light effects alternating shadows and lights with blue, green and white. Many failures and many color combinations for a result that is rather poor for my taste. I will remain simpler next time. Finally, the face and long blonde hair had to receive another special attention because the figure is perched on a stump and his chest and face emerged from the adjacent figures. I'm globally happy with the final result so its owner, which is the most important!
