Rohan in Flames - Turn 8 (part II)

Battle in Westfold

The 1st army of Isengard with 733 points fights against the 1st army of Rohan with 300 points. This battle should be easily won by the troops of the White Hand whose numerical superiority is overwhelming. Rohan must slow down Saruman's troops avoiding having too many losses and then go reinforce the garrison in Colnurhim.

The army of Isengard is composed of 29 warriors Uruk-hai, 6 Berserkers, a big troll and 10 crossbowmen. This force is commanded by two captains: Uglúk the heads cutter and his second but still bloody Kraduk. Rohan aligns 17 riders controlled by Maldruin who has been entrusted with this hopeless task.

Turn 1-2

Uruks deploy first and occupy the entire width of the table. The troll is placed in the center to be able to move on either wings which are each composed of a small band of warriors with some uruk crossbowmen and one of the captains. Rohan's cavalry is concentrated on my left flank. I do not know how this battle will be played by my opponent: will he harass me with his cavalry avoiding contact or will he pounce on my weakest point trying to do maximum damages before retreating as fast as he came? Anyway Uruks are more numerous and more powerful in close combat. There is therefore no hesitation, I must get my troops on close combat as soon as possible. My goal is to set the cavalry on my left by strengthening the flank while I organize a turning movement with troops in the center and right flank.

With an alternate initiative, the first two turns see Rohirrims approaching my left flank. The progression is shy and rider's shoots are ineffective. Uruks begin a turning movement with troops located on the right side while the left side is bound to receive riders charge. Crossbowmen weaken Rohirrims killing one rider and two horses. So far everything is going as planned ..

Losses: Rohan 1/18 (5%) - Isengard 0/54 (0%)

Pertes: Rohan 1/18 (5%) - Isengard 0/54 (0%)

Turn 3-4

The initiative of these two turns is back to Isengard. I hesitate on what to do when Maldruin declares a heroic charge and rushes with some riders on my left flank. Even if they kill one Uruk during his charge, he is lost! All the cavalry could not follow and I therefore take this opportunity to surround him and his riders. The shooting of Rohan are still without effect while uruk-haï crossbowmen make their office killing another rider and 2 horses. Rohirrims will end the game on foot if it continues.

During the fight, Uruks continue their slow but destructive task killing 3 riders and 2 foot warriors. Maldruin and one of his men attempt to retaliate by killing 3 uruk warriors but it is insufficient. It is clear that fight on in these conditions is pure madness and will not delay the troops of the White Hand. Maldruin decides to sound the retreat and join as soon as possible the Rohan garrison in Colnurhim.

Uglúk looks at Rohirrims fleeing the battlefield. Colnurhim road is now open and serious things will finally begin. This is a victory for Isengard!

Losses: Rohan 7/18 (38%) - Isengard 4/54 (7%)

Pertes: Rohan 7/18 (38%) - Isengard 4/54 (7%)

Rohan in Flames - Turn 8

Central position

Rohan again wins the initiative and gathers 300 resource points. The 3rd Army retreats towards Edoras while the 4th Army takes position in the village of Colnurhim. Argh! Here is the village again well defended by 400 points of troops and my 3rd retired army is unable to contest the position.

The 5th Army of Rohan strengthens the 2nd army stationed at Helm's Deep totaling 1436 points of troops. Well, I think I can forget the assault of the fortress. I would need at least 3 full armies to succeed. Mission impossible!

After a very long discussion, Ents decide to move. Slowly, very slowly, much too slowly to the taste of my opponent! But they are Ents after all, you cannot ask them to do sprints. Fortunately, because they go towards Orthanc and I do not see my 2nd army stand up in front of great oaks, chestnuts and other kind of trees...

Isengard harvest 300 resource points and calls for Mordor. Not a single second of hesitation! I must create a second front in the east if I want to have a chance to win. My 3rd Army retreats slowly towards Orthanc and that leaves me two choices: either I merge with my 1st army forming a new army of 750 points (the max authorized), or I rush with my 1st army to take the village of Colnurhim defended by the 4th Rohan army with 400 points. The risk is to be intercepted by the 1st army of Rohan on the way to the village. In theory, an army cannot intercept while crossing a river, but we decide on a 6 with the die, troops find a ford to cross. And of course, my opponent draws a 6!

Even if confrontation is to the advantage of Isengard (696 points for the troops of the White Hand against 300 points for Rohan), Rohan will slow my advance towards the village. The 4th Army in Colnurhim will be able to strengthen during the next turn and retrieve the remains of the 1st Army. So I have no choice but to win this battle by doing maximum damages while saving up my troops.

---ooOoo---
